[SOLVED] question about deleting a user account on the system

I just discovered that one of my partitions is chowned to a user account that I abandoned because I had made a typo on the name. Fine, so I just chowned it to myself. I then deleted the unwanted user account (hadn't gotten around to it); but I am just wondering what would have happened if I had deleted the account before chowning the partition to myself. If the partition and its files were owned by a non-existent user.
