Dracut can't find my disk after a kernel update went wrong
by RandomLurker39 from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5KX5N)
Hi people at LinuxQuestions.org! New user here.
I'm not sure how much of a software issue is this, so, if a mod is reading this, please move this thread to the proper subforum.
A kernel update went wrong and I can't boot. I forgot the version I updated to, I think it was 5.11 or 5.12.
This is what happened: DNF was installing the downloaded packages when my laptop ran out of battery, I forgot what did I update exactly, but I know it included a new Linux kernel version and possibly GRUB.
Before anyone asks, my distro is Fedora 34 AMD64, with KDE Plasma desktop.
The day after I updated, I couldn't boot, because of a disk-related error. In the boot process, Plymouth Boot Screen shows a Dracut initqueue timeout, as usual with this sort of errors.
After the screen gets filled with "dracut-initqueue timeout: starting timeout scripts", it says "/dev/disk/by-uuid/(hexadecimal number string) does not exist", then I'm at the Dracut emergency shell, which I can't access because I forgot my root password or I didn't set one, but I can access said shell via Rescue Mode.
For some reason, there's no recovery mode in the GRUB boot menu, possibly because I forgot to enable it.
I didn't change my disk partitions at all.
When booting from a Live USB, I can't find my disk either. The live system works, as I'm typing this post from a live system on the same laptop. Running blkid and fdisk shows only the temporary Live USB partitions.
I tried GParted, but it doesn't detect my SSD at all, only the temporary Live USB partitions.
And my laptop ain't old enough for the SSD to suddenly stop working (bought last year).
Can anyone help me to detect what's the issue and take care of it? Thanks in advance.
I forgot to tell: This happened 2-3 weeks ago at the time of this post.
