Getting Started With Translation Work?

Hi Everyone

I searched the forms and I did not see anything about this...

I am native English but excited about Afrikaans and I should be near fluent in about a year or so, I have made a lot of progress.

The Afrikaans gnome team seems to be dead and I posted to the main gnome list but did not hear back.

I assume that most translation work is done through gnome and KDE but is that false? Is there a better way to get started?
