49ers' Lynch offering Sherman, family support after CB's arrest
Richard Sherman isn't a member of the San Francisco 49ers anymore, but 49ers general manager John Lynch is offering the free-agent cornerback support after his recent off-field incident.
Sherman, who played the last three seasons in San Francisco, was arrested Wednesday on a burglary domestic violence charge after forcing his way into his in-laws' residence in Seattle. Police are also recommending DUI and hit-and-run misdemeanor charges against Sherman after investigating a single-car incident that preceded his arrest.
"Obviously, (it's) not the news you want to hear," Lynch said Thursday, according to USA Today's Nate Davis. "Obviously, reached out to the family - to Richard, to Ashley (Sherman's wife) - just let them know that we want to be a resource for them. We do for all our players, both current and former.
"More than anything, just praying for them," Lynch added. "They're good people, and just praying that they find their way through this, and we'll support them any way we can."
Sherman was expected to find a new team soon after free agency opened in March, but the 33-year-old recently said he was waiting for the right opportunity to join a contender. The five-time Pro Bowler has also said he intends to play two more years in the NFL.
Although Lynch didn't specifically speak about Sherman, he said some players may have a tough time transitioning to the end of their careers.
"I don't care how prepared people might think you are, it's a difficult one," Lynch said, according to NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco. "People struggle with that for a variety of reasons. It's difficult."
Sherman, a fifth-round pick in 2011, spent his first seven NFL campaigns with the Seattle Seahawks.
