What is the difference between man 2 fork and man fork

I tried both commands in terminal and could not find a difference in the content that was displayed. If using the '2' in the command (e.g man 2 fork') does it display the contents of the man page related to section 2 ? I'm a little confused with respect to using a numeric in the man command. Any help would be appreciated.
