On Mint 64bit Ram is reporting really weird from dmidecode

So new to Linux and I know about enough to potentially kill something. I went into the system monitor and my ram was reporting as 3.7 GiB. That kind of confused me and made me think that maybe something had gone bad on it but I am currently led to believe that that may just be being reported that way because of something in the bios or because what is missing is just what the kernal is taking up. But in trying to check on things since I want to upgrade the ram in this computer to 8 GiB I found the command line for dmidecode --type 17 and what that kicked back out confused me even more because I know the ram that is in this computer is sodimm memory and it kicked it back as dimm memory as well as leaving a lot of blank/unknowns.
