KDE Desktop trash icon full/empty repair

Eventually the Trash icon gets stuck on `user-trash-full` when there are no files in the trash folder and the Empty Trash option in the context menu is inactive. I simply right-click, move the icon to the Trash, open Dolphin and drag the Trash icon in the left-hand column onto the desktop.
Does anyone know why the new trash icon does that after a day or two?
