Ubuntu 18.04 upgrade option

When I use the software updater on my ubuntu 18.04 I see there is an update and upgrade option. I keep the software updated on a regular basis but am wondering What would happen if i chose the upgrade option. Would it cause problems with my current operating system? If there are possible problems what might they be? I realize I posted this question previously but not really clear on the responses or if there might have been some improvement to the upgrade.
