Peel Regional Police have charged a 70-year-old man after police were called about a dog being dragged from a moving car in Mississauga.

According to police, officers were called to the Destination Drive and Winston Churchill Boulevard area of the city after residents alerted officers to an animal complaint.

Police said a dog was seen being dragged on its leash from a moving car and, once locals stopped the vehicle, the driver dropped the leash and fled the area.

Residents who witnessed the incident picked up the dog and brought it to a local veterinarian in the area.

The dog has been identified as a seven-month-old Pomeranian named Sky.

Police said a 70-year-old man has been arrested and is facing impaired driving, animal cruelty and dangerous weapons charges.

Following the initial incident, Sky was transported to an emergency clinic in Oakville. The dog is expected to make a full recovery from its injuries.

Police said the animal hospital has received numerous offers of donations, but is not in a position to accept them. Instead, residents wishing to donate can send their money to local humane societies.

Anyone with information regarding this incident can speak with investigators at 905-453-2121 ext. 1133.
