[current] Kmail not updating or sending messages since last update - Akonadi issue?

I'm having trouble with kmail / kontact since I updated my installation of Slackware64 current yesterday, first time in about three weeks. Symptoms include being unable to move messages on imap folders, being unable to send messages through smtp, failing to mark messages read, to delete messages, and being unable to download new mails. I'm seeing error dialogs opening with the text "Failed to append item"
To further investigate I opened akonadiconsole and enabled some logging. The following excerpt includes the main error messages:

Finally, I made a new user account and tried to set up my email account from there, to no avail. (Should have done that last bit earlier, in hindsight...) I have all Slackware packages installed, except the xfce series.
Is anyone else seeing this? I thought it might have to do with the recent upgrade of mariadb. Anyway, reactions and suggestions are more than welcome! Using Thunderbird in the meantime, but I'd rather have kmail.
