Hamilton police believe more than one weapon was used in a targeted shooting behind a restaurant in Stoney Creek Friday night that left a 17-year-old boy dead and two of his family members hurt.

Detectives continue to investigate why the trio were shot around 7:45 p.m. Aug. 6 behind 288 Mud St. W.

The shooting was targeted, but detectives don't know whether one or all of the victims were sought out, said Hamilton police acting Det. Sgt. Geoff Burbidge, of the major crime unit.

The 17-year-old, a 25-year-old man and a 37-year-old man were standing outside their vehicle parked behind a restaurant when they were approached by two suspects.

The suspects, only described as wearing dark clothing, arrived at the plaza in their own vehicle, but got out and approached on foot. Very quickly they began firing, Burbidge said.

The pair allegedly fired multiple times. Police believe more than one weapon was used.

No guns have been recovered. No vehicle description has been released.

It was a very quick interaction (before the shooting), if there was any interaction at all," Burbidge said.

It's not clear what the victims were doing there before the shooting or how long they stood in the parking lot at the rear of the plaza. There is a fence and neighbouring apartment building on the other side.

It's also not clear if anyone beyond the two suspects was involved.

The victim's name has not yet been released.

Police have not revealed the relationship between the victims to protect their identities.

The 35-year-old suffered life-altering" injuries and remains in hospital. The 25-year-old was treated and released.

Burbidge said police have recovered high-quality video from businesses in the area and are working to sort through the footage.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Frank De Vuono at 905-546-3827.
