Mint 20.1 "draggy" when switching users.

I'm running Mint 20.1 on a Dell "all-in-one", which was originally "born" as a W7 machine. I have no idea what HW is inside. A big clue is that the combo is dead SLOW..........

othrwise, the #1 issue is that switching users leads to some major delays. Possibly related: With Mint, I was always used to getting a choice of who i want to be for a session. Now, the first user to be named during installation is at once the super-user, and the default on boot-up.

I'm hoping to somehow get back to what I'm used to from a previous setup:
-at boot time:choice of who gets logged in
--switch GUI users via CTRL-ALT-F7/F8 (I have not yet checked to see if I get into "terminal mode with CTRL-ALT- F1/F2/F3
