Recovering Whatsapp Messages

I would like to recover deleted WhatsApp Messages from last February as the screw is being turned on a miscreant and they might prove useful.
My phone is 32G, and things are backed up to my gmail account. THey should be up in the ether somewhere, seeing as Google wants to know everything from your nappy changes forward these days. Can I do a 'manual restore' instead of the automatic one google does? Might they still be on the phone? How would I go about getting them back? I do not have any Samsung utilities set up on the phone, which is a Samsung S7 Edge on Android-8.0 & kernel-3.18.91-<gibberish>.
