Mac Jones has a chance to separate himself in the New England Patriots' quarterback competition.

"It is," coach Bill Belichick said Tuesday when asked if Sunday's preseason finale against the New York Giants is a good opportunity for the rookie passer, according to NBC Sports Boston. Belichick added, "Look, our entire team has opportunities every day."

The Patriots announced Monday that quarterback Cam Newton would be away from the practice field until Thursday due to a "misunderstanding" regarding COVID-19 protocols.

An important member of the Patriots organization believes the situation has "opened" a window of opportunity for Jones, reports NFL Network's Mike Giardi.

"We'll evaluate everything the way we always do: based on the information we have," Belichick said Tuesday, according to Giardi.

There's also some frustration within the organization regarding Newton's situation, sources told Giardi.

The 10-year veteran left the New England area for team-approved medical treatment. Newton has tested negative for the virus so far but is subject to a five-day re-entry period before being allowed to return to the team.

Newton is participating virtually in team activities during his absence.
