Linux newbie wondering about Libreboot.

New to the Linux game.

I plan to buy a T400 Thinkpad with an Intel 2 Duo Core processor, but I want to get rid of the IME via Libreboot, as I'm becoming a Linux/BSD enthusiast for privacy purposes.

Obviously as a noob the learning journey will be tough, but some simple questions:

1. Can Libreboot be done via just downloading software onto a USB and plugging it into the laptop and working from there, or do I have to do the whole soldering/raspberry pi thing?

2. Should one libreboot BEFORE or AFTER installing a Linux distro? (assuming we start with the base windows)

3. Is getting rid of the IME even worth it, or is the distro itself more important for privacy?

4. What are the best swiss-army knife, non-systemD distros that are privacy focused and good for beginners? Heck, I'll even take a BSD-based system if it gives me basic features and is easy to install.
