Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin remains hopeful that the team can agree to a contract extension with outside linebacker TJ Watt.

"I remain optimistic something will get done from a deal perspective," Tomlin said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor.

Watt has only participated in individual drills since arriving at training camp, opting not to take part in team drills without a new contract.

Tomlin predicts that will change Wednesday as the Steelers prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

"I'm expecting him to work tomorrow. I'm proceeding with the assumption he's going to work tomorrow," Tomlin added.

Pittsburgh has typically required that players practice in order to play, but Tomlin said he hasn't thought about a benchmark for Watt due to his confidence in the situation being resolved.

"I've been optimistic about this process (running) its course," Tomlin noted. "And so, because of that optimism, I'm anticipating quality play for him this weekend and beyond."

The 26-year-old pass-rusher is headed into the final year of his rookie deal, which is set to pay him just over $10 million in base salary, per Spotrac. Watt's current salary ranks 10th among edge rushers.

Guaranteed money is likely the issue holding up contract talks. Pittsburgh's longtime opposition to offering full guarantees beyond the first year could reportedly spoil negotiations with Watt, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala.

Watt has been one of the league's best pass-rushers since he was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old led the NFL in sacks last season with 15 while also generating 41 quarterback hits. He has recorded 49.5 sacks, 17 forced fumbles, and four interceptions over his career.
