Supported bluetooth USB dongles

Sometime ago, I had bluetooth working on my HP Slimline 290-p0014, I have been tracking several linux distros and can't be certain which distro worked. I am currently booting KDE Neon, Kubuntu, and Linux Mint, all recent version. My bluetooth adapter is not found.
But my question is, which brand of bluetooth adapter is supported. At BestBuy in the US, they have ASUS and Insignia (BestBuy's brand).
I am only buying one for troubleshooting until my built-in adapter is supported. These at Best Buy are under $20.
Does linux support bluetooth 5.0 yet? Or should I get a 4.0.
