Keyboard and Mouse only work for root in Xorg

Long time since I ran Debian. Thought I'd use some extra hard drive space and play. I removed SystemD and Wayland, added SysV and Xorg in a minimal network install. Opted for Enlightenment for my desktop. Everything went smoothly except I opted for a root user and the password was not installed. I booted up my Slackware and mounted Debian and adjusted the root account so I could add a password. I had no problems installing Xorg or Enlightenment. After logging in as a regular user, I ran startx and got the Enlightenment setup screen but mouse nor keyboard would work. But when I log in as root, everything works! I know this is some kind of permissions problem, but Im not having much luck. Any ideas?
