The Miami Dolphins have placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, which comes with a minimum three-week absence.

Tagovailoa fractured his ribs in last Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Backup Jacoby Brissett is slated to start the Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Tagovailoa will also miss a Week 4 date with the Indianapolis Colts and Week 5 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before potentially returning for a road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.

This isn't Tagovailoa's first significant injury. He suffered a major hip injury in his final college season at Alabama. Selected fifth overall in the 2020 draft, he started his first game in Week 8 of last season and completed 64% of his passes for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 10 contests.

Tagovailoa completed 16 of 27 passes for 202 yards, a touchdown, and a pick in a Week 1 win over the New England Patriots before going down after four passes against the Bills the following week.

Brissett went 24-for-40 for 169 yards and an interception in the 35-0 blowout loss. The veteran could suit up against his former team next week after playing in 46 games for the Colts from 2017-2020.
