HDMI and toslink audio help.

Hello everyone,
I have a computer running Pop!_OS 21.04 that I would like to use with my home theater system. I have an HDMI cable run to my receiver (Marantz AV9000), however this receiver does not have HDMI so I got an HDMI -> HDMI + toslink converter. Unfortunately my computer recognizes the converter as a display but not an audio output. I opened "PulseAudio Volume Control" and under the "Configuration" tab all of the options say "(unplugged)(unavailable)" at the end. What do you all recommend I do? Is toslink the best way to connect to my receiver?
I would also like to note that I have tried my converter with other HDMI devices and both video and audio work fine.
