Loading Linux onto a Blank Hard Drive with no cd

Im a pensioner with an old HP laptop, I want to get away from the costs of Microsoft I bought a small new hard drive and installed it. However I dont know how to get and install the linux system on it now. Help please dont get super technical thanks
