Formatting an old hard drive

I have a machine running Fedora 18 (it is not on the internet and it does its job).
I want to add an additional hard drive and I have an old 250 GB one I can use.
When I try to format the drive, it comes up with an error that the drive is in use.
What should I do to allow this drive to be initialised?
