Slackware -current - speed of installation and DE launch questions
by silverlining from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5R3EA)
I've been using Slackware 14.2 ever since it came out. I'd love to continue with it but there's probably a limit to how much it can be upgraded (if I even knew at which point to start), so I'm patiently waiting for Slackware 15.
I've been testing -current 64-bit in VirtualBox (Win10 host) and also have 14.2 64-bit in VBox to compare. I noticed that 14.2 uses about 8GB full install, and -current needs double that. The size increase doesn't bother me but for some reason installing packages for 14.2 takes 30 minutes and -current takes 2 hours. 14.2 is from a genuine Slackware DVD and -current is an ISO that I wrote to Verbatim 16x DVD-R using dd from downloaded ISO file (9-13-2021).
I'm using an 18GB Linux partition and a 2GB swap partition for both and wondering if those would be limiting the install speed of -current. I also installed -current on a PC with an SSD and it installed much quicker than in VBox, of course. The question is, why 14.2 installs 2X faster per end-GB of installation.
One other issue is that KDE or Xfce in 14.2 is much quicker to start up than in -current.
Thanks!
