Oakville Amazon warehouse withdrawn
Amazon has ended its plan for a 314,166-square-foot warehouse on 2175 Cornwall Road in Oakville. The announcement came Monday after a weekend of protests opposing the deal.
Residents raised concerns about increased congestion, noise and pollution. An impact study anticipated 200 employees and 689 parking spaces plus sevel delivery trucks.
Amazon officials informed Ward 3 Councillor Janet Haslett-Theal, and by extension town council, that they decided not to lease the Cornwall Road property. They will instead locate the facility in the Southdown heavy industry area in Mississauga on Avonhead road.
Councillor Dave Gittings, also of Ward 3, the Joshua's Creek Resident Association as well other concerned citizens provided feedback on the project and was what made Amazon decide to pull out.
For the past 18 months, Councillor Haslett-Theal and I have been keeping our residents up-to-date and aware of the H&R- Amazon application at 2175 Cornwall Road," said Gittings in a press release.
After a full process, we are pleased that a more suitable location was secured nearby." Haslett-Theal said it was gratifying to hear that Amazon respected and listened to our community."
Mayor Robert Burton added: Amazon consideration of council's and the community's concerns is appreciated." He praised the Government of Ontario's assistance" for capping future uses of the site" which will prove important in the future, whether or not Amazon is involved."
