Cleland, a former US army captain, also served as head of Veterans Administration, Georgia secretary of state and a state senator

Max Cleland, who lost three limbs in Vietnam but went on to be a US senator from Georgia, died on Tuesday. He was 79.

Cleland died at his home in Atlanta from congestive heart failure, his personal assistant Linda Dean said.
