VLC - incomplete install

Hello. I downloaded this package from

and it passed the md5 checksum so:

root@darkstar:/home/live/Downloads#Then I went to menu > Multimedia and sure enough VLC was listed but when I tried to open it nothing happened. Likewise, when I browsed to a vid file and right-clicked on it > Open with > VLC media player - again nothing happened.
What went wrong?
