Ramsey jokes about recruiting role: 'Trying to get Derwin James here next'
Los Angeles Rams All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey may not be done pursuing superstars for his team.
"You never know. I'm trying to get (Los Angeles Chargers defensive back) Derwin (James) here next," Ramsey said Friday when asked if he's still working on attracting other players to join the Rams, according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.
"I'm joking but ... I'm not," he added.
Ramsey played a key role in recruiting Los Angeles' two major acquisitions over the last two weeks. The 27-year-old, who's close friends with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and linebacker Von Miller, was in contact with the duo before they decided to join the Rams.
Beckham signed a one-year pact with L.A. on Thursday, while Miller was traded from the Denver Broncos on Nov. 1 for second- and third-round picks.
"I want to be teammates with anybody who I feel is good," Ramsey said. "In certain instances this year, when I had a personal relationship with the two guys ... I just happen to be talking to them as we usually do, and figuring out maybe a possibility, and throwing it out there a little bit trying to see if they rocking with it or not, and then just trying to make it all happen."
The Rams weren't among the main destinations linked to Beckham when he became a free agent Tuesday. However, Ramsey called Beckham on Thursday morning and used Rams receivers Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp and quarterback Matthew Stafford to make his final pitch, according to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.
Ramsey began his NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars but requested a trade after three-plus seasons due to a contract dispute. James made a push for Ramsey at the time before the Jaguars sent him to the Rams as part of a blockbuster deal.
Ramsey and James both played at Florida State but spent only one season together. Ramsey left the Seminoles as the fifth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, while James was the No. 17 selection two years later.
