Does yum automatically remove the packages it upgrades?

I'm having a serious senior moment here. I'm using RHEL 7.9. I am installing packages using yum. Does yum overwrite packages it replaces, does it remove them post-replacement, or does it store them somewhere in /var? Thank you all.
