Westbound 403 and parts of King Street West bridge closed for police investigation

Burlington OPP are asking motorists to proceed with caution" through Hamilton after a series of crashes and incidents snarled traffic on the city's highways.

Police had initially closed off a westbound section of Highway 403 Tuesday morning for an investigation.

In a tweet, police said officers were on scene investigating an incident on the highway just west of Main Street West in Hamilton. All westbound traffic is being diverted off at the Main Street East exit, according to police.

Motorists are being advised to anticipate a lengthy closure" of the highway.

As a result of the initial incident, police later reported a pair of secondary collisions.

Traffic on the eastbound side has also been affected by a crash and one lane is blocked near Kay Drage Park.

Another collision has also closed the nearby Highway 6 southbound ramp to the 403, according to police. A photo from the scene shows a collision between two commercial vehicles on the ramp.

Police said one person was being extricated by emergency services.

Please, proceed with caution through (the) area," read the tweet, warning of major delays."

After an earlier closure, police have reopened three lanes on King Street West, between Dundurn Street North and Macklin Street North. One lane remains closed.

The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a medical assistance call on the highway just before 11 a.m., according to their incident Twitter feed.

Hamilton Paramedic Services Supt. Dave Thompson could not comment on the initial incident but confirmed paramedics did respond.

Thompson said emergency services also responded to the first secondary collision and transported one person to hospital with minor injuries. It's unclear if paramedics responded to the second crash.
