Ontario reporting more than 4,000 COVID-19 cases Sunday
Ontario is reporting another 4,177 COVID-19 cases and two more deaths, according to its latest report released Sunday morning.
VACCINES
Ontario has administered 140,827 vaccine doses since its last daily update, with 25,315,780 vaccines given in total as of 8 p.m. the previous night.
According to the Star's vaccine tracker, 12,094,044 people in Ontario have received at least one shot. That works out to approximately 86.3 per cent of the eligible population five years and older and the equivalent of 82.3 per cent of the total population, including those not yet eligible for the vaccine.
The province says 11,359,730 people have completed received two doses. That works out to approximately 81.1 per cent of the eligible population five years and older, and the equivalent of 77.3 per cent of the total population, including those not yet eligible for the vaccine.
The provincial data now includes a cumulative number of people who have received booster doses. In Ontario, 1,845,407 people have received three doses of any Health Canada approved vaccine.
CASES BY VACCINE STATUS
The province reports 905 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in unvaccinated people, 142 were partially vaccinated, and 2,977 cases in fully vaccinated people. The province says even with a highly effective vaccine, cases may occur among vaccinated individuals due to a larger proportion of the population being vaccinated than unvaccinated. The province warns the data may not match daily COVID case counts because records with a missing or invalid health card number can't be linked.
There are 283 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, including 146 patients in intensive care testing positive for COVID-19. There are 103 people on ventilators. These hospitalization numbers may be incomplete as not all hospitals report on weekends.
COVID IN SCHOOLS
The province is also including data on COVID-19 in schools as part of its daily reporting.
As of Friday, there are 1,236 schools with a reported case of COVID out of 4,844 schools in the province, or 25.52 per cent.
There were 339 new cases reported Friday for a total of 11,204 reported school-related COVID cases in Ontario.
The province says 72 schools have closed due to outbreaks or operational considerations. It does not include regional closures in a local public health unit area.

COVID TESTING
Ontario's seven-day average is at 2,542 cases daily and the seven-day average for deaths is at five daily.
The province says 51,151 tests were completed the previous day, with an 8.7 per cent positivity rate.
Locally, there are 1,039 cases in Toronto, 365 in York Region, 334 in Ottawa, 311 in Peel and 245 in Halton Region.
COVID IN LONG-TERM-CARE
Meanwhile, the province is reporting that there are no new deaths in long-term care so the number of residents who have died stays the same at 3,831, in the latest report released by the province.
This data is self-reported by the long-term-care homes to the Ministry of Long-Term Care. Daily case and death figures may not immediately match the numbers posted by the local public health units due to lags in reporting time.
VARIANTS OF CONCERN
There were 175 more cases of the Delta variant first detected in India, for a cumulative total of 14,399 cases.
There are 32 more cases of the Omicron variant first identified by South Africa, for a cumulative total of 250 cases.
