Reich called Rivers but says Ehlinger will start if Wentz can't play

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich admitted he's been in contact with retired quarterback Phillip Rivers but said Sam Ehlinger will start in Week 17 if Carson Wentz can't come off the COVID-19 list.

"If (Wentz) clears his fifth day, that would be Sunday, and in theory, he would be available for the game if he clears," Reich said, according to ESPN's Mike Wells. "He will be in meetings virtual, so if he does clear, he can play. At this point, Sam is our starter. I'm excited for Sam."

Wentz was originally thought to be lost for Sunday's contest against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the NFL's updated COVID-19 protocols reduce the quarantine period from 10 days to five, making it possible for the passer to return for the game.

The uncertainty surrounding Wentz sparked discussion about the possibility of Rivers coming out of retirement to play for his old club. While Reich confirmed talking to the 40-year-old, he noted he had nothing to report.

"You guys know I'm close to him," Reich said. "We talked all year long. Did talk to him fairly recently. He was on vacation with his family. I have talked to him about our situation here but nothing to report and no other further comment at this point."

Rivers led the Colts to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance in 2020, his final year in the NFL.

Reich threw his support behind Ehlinger ahead of the pivotal Week 17 bout.

"I think Sam is made for moments like this," Reich said. "He has that special it factor. Has really good quarterback skills. Has continued to improve. Excited about the opportunity this week to prepare, and we'll see how the week plays out."

The Colts approach the Week 17 bout in the AFC's fifth seed at 9-6, while the Raiders are chasing a playoff spot at 8-7.
