San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will require surgery on his injured thumb but is leaving it for the offseason, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Garoppolo reportedly chipped a bone and tore a ligament in his right thumb versus the Tennessee Titans in Week 16. He won't be available for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans with his team vying for a playoff spot.

Injuries have derailed Garoppolo in two of the previous three seasons and led the 49ers to draft a successor in Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. Nate Sudfeld will back up Lance while Garoppolo is sidelined.

The 49ers are optimistic that Garoppolo will return for the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Garoppolo has thrown for 3,494 yards with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season while completing 60% of his pass attempts.

Garoppolo didn't practice at all in Week 17.
