Report: Raiders request interview with Pats' Mayo for head coaching job
The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly begun searching for a new general manager and potential head coach.
Las Vegas requested permission to interview New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo for its head coaching position, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Mayo is the first external candidate to emerge in the team's coaching search. Interim head coach Rich Bisaccia is also expected to garner consideration.
The 35-year-old Mayo, who earned two Pro Bowl nods while playing for the Patriots from 2008-15, has been on New England's sideline since 2019.
Additionally, the Raiders requested permission to speak with Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler for their vacant general manager job, per Schefter. The club is also expected to ask for a meeting with Indianapolis Colts executive Ed Dodds, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Ziegler has been with the Patriots for 10 years. He was a member of the Denver Broncos' scouting department for three seasons before joining New England.
The Raiders are looking for a new executive to replace Mike Mayock, who was fired Monday after three seasons with the club.
Former Raiders head coach Jon Gruden named Maycock the club's general manager at the end of the 2018 season. Las Vegas compiled a 25-24 record over the last three campaigns and has been widely criticized for its draft decisions in recent years.
Bisaccia took over for the final 12 games of the 2021 regular season after Gruden resigned. The Raiders went 7-5 in those contests, ultimately earning their first playoff berth since 2016. However, they fell short against the Cincinnati Bengals in the wild-card round.
