Tenant, firefighter sent to hospital after Charlton Avenue West fire
Two people, including a firefighter, were taken to hospital overnight after a fire at a multi-unit residence on Charlton Avenue West.
A woman, who is a tenant, was assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital. The firefighter was hurt when a ceiling collapsed inside the building at 52 Charlton Ave. W., said deputy fire chief Dan Milovanovic.
Both have since been released from hospital.
Emergency services were called to the building - a two-and-a-half storey, detached residence split into multiple units - around 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6.
Firefighters found a well-involved fire on the ground floor, he said.
The fire was brought under control quickly, but crews remained on scene for some time checking to see if the fire had spread. It was during overhaul when a portion of the ceiling collapsed onto the firefighter, Milovanovic said.
The fire was caused by an issue with a space heater, he said.
Damages are estimated around $400,000.
