Report: 49ers intend to trade Garoppolo before March 16

The San Francisco 49ers intend to trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo before the new league year begins on March 16, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Garoppolo has a no-trade clause that expires on that date, but Garafolo reports that Garoppolo and the 49ers are expected to work together to determine his next team.

The 30-year-old passer has spent the last five seasons with the 49ers, leading them to Super Bowl LIV - which they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs - and the NFC Championship Game this past season. San Francisco acquired him in a 2017 trade with the New England Patriots.

The native of Illinois is aware he'll likely soon be sporting a new uniform, highlighting his desire to join a competitor in his post-season exit interview.

"I just want to go with a place where they want to win," he said earlier in February.

Garoppolo threw for 3,810 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing 68.3% of his pass attempts in 2021.

With Garoppolo reportedly on his way out, Trey Lance is the likely candidate to earn the starting job after San Francisco traded three first-round picks to acquire him in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Garoppolo has a $26.9-million cap hit and is the final year of a 5-year, $137.5-million contract he signed in 2018, according to Spotrac.
