Free-agent running back Adrian Peterson won't face felony domestic violence charges stemming from his arrest Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport, a representative from the L.A. County district attorney's office told TMZ Sports.

However, Peterson could still receive a misdemeanor domestic violence charge as his case has been referred to the L.A. City Attorney.

Peterson and his wife, Ashley Brown, allegedly had a verbal and physical altercation on an aircraft before a flight to Houston, airport police said, according to NFL Media.

He was released on a $50,000 bail on Sunday afternoon. Brown, meanwhile, remained on the flight to Houston.

"I was literally mind-blown that they took me to jail," Peterson told Fox 26 Sports on Monday.

"(We) got into an argument on the plane," he added. "That was pretty much the gist of it. I ended up grabbing her hand and taking her ring off her finger."

Ashley defended her husband in an Instagram post Tuesday. She described the incident as a verbal argument and said: "At no point did Adrian hit or strike me."

Peterson, who ranks fifth in NFL history with 14,918 career rushing yards, spent the 2021 season with the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans.
