I was surprised to hear a few concerns for Joshua when this was originally posted, which makes me think that maybe I didn't get his face quite right in that penultimate panel. Can you trust me when I say that he's being honest with her? Joshua, aside from being a lousy liar, is a master at being true to himself in the most tactful and considerate way.

If he hadn't have been ready, he would've told her so. I promise.
