Hamilton under wind warning: Transport truck rollover closes Skyway Bridge
The Niagara bound QEW was blocked Sunday near the top of the Hamilton-Burlington Skyway bridge after a transport truck rolled over in powerful wind gusts.
A wind warning was issued earlier in the day by Environment Canada warning of gusts up to 100 km/h.
First responders were called to the scene after 10:45 a.m., where the Ontario Provincial Police said a tractor trailer was blocking all lanes.
In an audio message on Twitter, the OPP said the truck was on its side as a result of strong winds," with gusts on the top of the skyway hitting 75 km/h.
Police closed the Burlington Skyway in both directions in the early afternoon. The Garden City Skyway in St. Catharines was also closed by the OPP, with winds gusting up to 90 km/h.
No one was injured in the rollover.
The weather warning, issued at 5 a.m., added that gusts of this magnitude can toss loose objects causing injury and damage." Also, the warning cautioned about potentially dangerous road conditions.
The highway was expected to be closed for some time to remove the truck and while the winds were dangerously strong.
This evening the wind speeds are forecast to ease gradually.
