Girl, 15, is dead and an 18-year-old man is charged with first-degree murder in Waterloo stabbing
WATERLOO - A 15-year-old Waterloo girl is dead and an 18-year-old man is charged with first-degree murder.
The girl died from several stab wounds, Waterloo Regional Police Supt. Eugene Fenton said Thursday at a media conference in front of the house where the girl lived, just hours after police received the 911 call.
It is a very tragic scene for the family, for the officers and all the emergency and medical staff who attempted to save this young lady," Fenton said.
Police were called to 152 Chelford Cres., in the Lincoln Heights neighbourhood just before 10 a.m. Fenton said the call was described as a disturbance involving weapons.
Inside the two-storey house, police found the girl with stab wounds and an 18-year-old man with self-inflicted stab wounds.
Fenton said the two teens were related and from the same family but police would not release how the pair are related. Both the victim and the man charged lived at the house on Chelford Crescent, he said.
Also in the house was the girl's mother. She was also injured, police said.
The male teen is undergoing surgery in a hospital outside of the region.
Police would not say how or why the stabbing occurred.
It's very early in the investigation. We are a few hours in and that will be part of the investigation," Fenton said.
He said officers will canvass the neighbourhood, going door-to-door speaking and interviewing residents about the family.
We will be on scene for several hours and into tomorrow as well," he said.
Neighbours in the quiet Waterloo neighbourhood were shocked by the stabbing death of the teenage girl. One woman broke down when told the girl was dead.
The murder is Waterloo Region's second homicide in 2022.
Last month, a Cambridge man, 46, was shot to death in the area of Cedar Street and Briar Hill Avenue. A Cambridge teen is charged with first-degree murder.
First-degree murder is a homicide that is both planned and deliberate.
