Report: Panthers not pursuing Mayfield trade
The Carolina Panthers don't currently have any interest in pursuing a trade for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, sources told The Athletic's Jeff Howe.
The news comes after Howe reported that Mayfield's camp had preliminary talks with the Panthers and Seattle Seahawks.
The Browns reportedly granted Mayfield permission to seek a new team after they acquired former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson on Friday. Mayfield submitted a trade request during the club's pursuit of Watson.
A former No. 1 overall pick, Mayfield's options appear to be dwindling with the Panthers out of the running. He apparently preferred a trade to the Indianapolis Colts, but they recently acquired Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons.
Mayfield had a down year last season after leading Cleveland to the playoffs in 2020. He posted a 6-8 record while completing just over 60% of his passes for 17 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.
The Panthers currently have Sam Darnold penciled in as their starting passer. However, they could target a quarterback with the No. 6 overall selection in the 2022 draft.
