With Russell Wilson out of the picture, the Seattle Seahawks' focus is shifting toward tying down star wideout DK Metcalf to a long-term extension.

Head coach Pete Carroll explained Tuesday that the team is gunning to get a deal done prior to the start of the 2022 season.

"It's really important to us," Carroll said on 93.3 KJR, according to Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune. "We love him. He maybe will go down as one of the great draft picks we've ever had here."

He added, "We are going to do everything we can to get it done."

Metcalf has been among the NFL's most explosive downfield threats since entering the league as a second-round pick in 2019. He's exceeded 900 yards in each of his three seasons and recorded a career-high 83 catches for 1,303 yards in 2020. He finished last year with 967 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The 24-year-old receiver will have a new quarterback throwing passes to him following Wilson's trade to the Denver Broncos. The Seahawks received Drew Lock from the Broncos, but Carroll added the club will "keep looking" for more outside help.

Metcalf is headed into the final year of his rookie contract.
