Hamilton is under a freezing rain warning Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning with a special weather statement for heavy rain in Hamilton and most of southern Ontario Wednesday.

All Halton District and Halton Catholic District schools are open but transportation services in Zone 3 are cancelled for the day.

There are no closures or cancellations reported for Hamilton.

The freezing rain warning calls for one to four millimetres of ice build up with wind gusts up to 70 km/h possible from Wednesday morning and into the afternoon.

Ice buildup may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur, says the weather service.

It is uncertain how much freezing rain will occur, they add. The freezing rain is expected to change to rain by early afternoon as temperatures rise.

Hamilton is expected a daytime high of 2 C.

The agency is also warning of heavy rain with 10 to 25 mm which could lead to flooding in some areas.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous.
