March is going out much like it came in, like a lion.

Spring temperatures may have hit a high of 16 C around the noon hour on Thursday, but a cold front is moving in with a wind warning in effect.

Environment Canada ended a special weather statement and immediately issued a wind warning for Hamilton and all of southern Ontario.

Strong winds from the southwest gusting to 90 kilometres per hour are expected through the afternoon, says the weather service.

Power failures and damage to roofs are possible. Beware of flying debris, Environment Canada adds.

Alectra Utilities is reporting a fallen tree as the cause of a power failure in the area of Parkside Drive and Mountain Brow Road and from Hamilton Street North to Granite Trail in Waterdown affecting nearly 1,000 residents and businesses.

Crews expect to have the power back on in the area by 4 p.m., the utility says on its website.

Winds are expected to die down by late-afternoon but gusts will continue overnight.

Temperatures near zero with flurries are forecast into Friday.
