Alex Dalton’s dad expresses mixed emotions after Ontario Provincial Police arrest suspected driver
Wayne Dalton is hoping for justice for his son.
On April 7, the suspected driver in the hit-and-run that cost 23-year-old Alex Dalton was arrested, almost a full year after the collision.
Alex was killed on April 23, 2021 when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a Chevy Tahoe that was reported stolen and being driven at a high speed along King Street West in Hagersville.
The accused, a 35-year-old Waterford resident, has been charged with causing death by criminal negligence, failure to stop at an accident resulting in death and six counts of operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.
The suspect had a court appearance on April 11, and their next court date has been scheduled for April 26. A bail hearing had not been set as of publication deadline.
Dalton confirmed the OPP had advised Alex's family about the arrest.
(The OPP) have been very good at keeping us in the loop of the investigation."
He noted that while, I'm very happy with this recent development," he was also Of course sad at the same time that my son is still gone. Hard times for sure."
This arrest marks the fourth in the police's investigation.
In January, a 30-year-old Waterford woman was charged with being accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence and public mischief.
In December 2021, two 25-year-olds, both from Ohsweken, were charged - one with accessory after the fact and the other with public mischief - misleading, with intent to mislead, causing a peace officer to enter on or continue an investigation.
None of the charges have been tested in court.
When asked whether the OPP anticipated that this would be the final arrest in this case, Const. Mary Gagliardi wrote in an email that she was "not able to comment as to whether there will be more arrests or not ... it is still an ongoing investigation."
Dalton is hopeful the criminal justice system "does the right thing.
"I want justice for my son," he said.
