CAMBRIDGE - A 22-year-old man is in hospital after he was shot by police Saturday afternoon.

The man remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Waterloo Regional Police were called to a house on Ironstone Drive near Sandalwood Drive off Myers Road in the Galt area of Cambridge at 12:25 p.m. for a wellness check.

There was an interaction between police officers and the man, and an officer discharged his firearm, said the Special Investigations Unit in a media release Saturday.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency that investigates incidents involving police in which there has been death, serious injury allegations or sexual assault.

In total, six SIU investigators are assigned to the case. Once the SIU gets involved in a police investigation, local police do not speak about the case.

Police had Ironstone Drive closed to the public on Saturday. Yellow police tape was tied around a few trees blocking off a large part of the street.

Many residents stood outside after the shooting, a few arriving to their street blocked off.

Lianne Nasello, who's lived on Ironstone Drive for 12 years, was at home when she heard gunshots.

I heard four gunshots in quick succession," she said in an interview. When I opened my door, I saw police in front of my house."

The man's personal belongings lay strewn on the street.

Nasello said she saw officers on top of a man and an ambulance took an injured man away.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about the investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online.
