A male student was stabbed outside Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute on Monday afternoon, shortly after school ended for the day, according to a letter sent to parents by school principal Brian Hill.

The student was taken to hospital by paramedics but was not seriously injured," the letter said.

Toronto Police are investigating and believe three suspects are involved, according to a tweet sent Monday evening. No arrests had been made as of 10 p.m. on Monday. The ages of the victim and suspects have not been released by police, nor whether the suspects are believed to also be students at the school.

According to the letter, the stabbing took place just outside the school building around 3:10 p.m., after most students and staff had left for the day from the high school located near Kingston and Birchmount Roads in Scarborough.

Our thoughts are with the student and their family for a speedy recovery," the letter said, adding that counselling and other supports will be available for students at the school.

Safety for staff and students is a top priority at the school, said Scarborough Southwest trustee Parthi Kandavel in a statement released Monday evening.

The staff is committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure the school is safe for all," he said.

Last year, 15-year-old Maahir Dosani died and two other teens were injured in a triple stabbing at Victoria Park Collegiate Institute in North York. Witnesses told the Star a fight broke out on school's track field after school ended for the day. A 19-year-old who did not attend the school was charged with second-degree murder and the case remains before the courts.

Earlier this year, a 14-year-old boy was charged with the first-degree murder and attempted murder after an alleged execution-style" shooting at David and Mary Thomson Collegiate in Scarborough. One 18-year-old student, Jaheim Robinson, was killed and police say the accused pointed his gun at another student but the gun did not fire.
