Worker injured at Ancaster construction site
The Ministry of Labour is investigating an incident at an Ancaster construction site that sent a 37-year-old worker to hospital Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the construction site at 558 Golf Links Rd., near McNiven Road, around 7:25 a.m. April 27.
The 37-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, said Hamilton police Const. Krista-Lee Ernst. Police were not required.
Hamilton Paramedic Service Supt. Dave Thompson said the construction worker was transported with moderate injuries."
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour said the worker was hurt when a piece of machinery failed."
Three ministry inspectors and an engineer have been assigned to the investigation, Ciara Nardelli said, adding that she could not provide further details at this time because the investigation is ongoing.
The workplace incident comes a day after a 36-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a forklift at Janco Steel Ltd. in Stoney Creek.
The Ministry of Labour continues to investigate that death. Nardelli said two ministry inspectors attended the scene.
As our investigation is ongoing, I am unable to provide further details at this time," she said Wednesday.
Hamilton police divisional detectives and the collision reconstruction unit are also assisting with that investigation. Since the man was hit by a motor vehicle, it counts as a traffic fatality - the ninth pedestrian death in Hamilton this year. Police say there is no evidence of criminality.
In 2018, the steel processing plant on Arvin Avenue was fined $150,000 related to a 2016 job site death after a man was pinned by a steel coil. In that case, Janco Steel pleaded guilty to failing to ensure Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act measures were followed.
Thursday marks the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which calls on governments and employers to prevent deaths and injuries on the job, and the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers.
