Cardinals draft McBride in 2nd round as 1st TE off the board
The Arizona Cardinals selected Colorado State tight end Trey McBride in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, No. 55 overall.
McBride is the first tight end off the board. He posted a monster season in 2021, notching 90 receptions and 1,121 yards. However, he caught only one touchdown.
The 22-year-old is the second notable addition to Arizona's offense through this year's draft; the Cardinals used their first-round pick Thursday in a trade to acquire wide receiver Marquise Brown from the Baltimore Ravens. The team previously drafted wideout Rondale Moore in the second round in 2021.
The Cardinals' tight end depth chart already features veteran Zach Ertz, who they traded for midway through last season. He signed a three-year deal with Arizona this offseason after catching 56 passes for 574 yards and three touchdowns through 11 games in his first year with the club.

This year's tight end class lacks elite difference-makers. It's more of a mixed bag of developmental prospects who have the potential to grow into capable NFL starters. McBride is in a tier of his own as an above-average pass-catcher who can line up all over the formation, and he has the speed to frustrate linebackers. He's coming off a 90-catch, 1,121-yard campaign where he only found the end zone once, but he showed he can serve as a primary offensive target. Despite the low touchdown total, he still proved himself worthy of the Mackey Award - given to the top tight end in college football. While he has room for improvement as a blocker, it's not an area of concern since he exhibits the drive to get the job done. The 22-year-old will have no problem getting on the field early and should enjoy a long career as a quality starter.
