Scottish Labour has become the closest challenger to Nicola Sturgeon's Scottish National party after Conservative support plunged to its worst electoral result in a decade.
Labour enjoyed an unexpected win in West Dunbartonshire, taking overall control of the council, as it won a swathe of seats across Scotland's 32 councils and made surprise gains in taking the second largest share of the vote.
