Woman rescued from Hamilton Mountain house fire
A woman was rescued from the garage roof of a Hamilton Mountain home during a multiple-alarm fire Tuesday.
Emergency services were called to the home on Royal Vista Drive, near Stone Church Road East and Upper Gage Avenue, around 11:20 a.m. May 31.
When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke and flames at the back of the building with a person trapped on the garage roof, said Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Coburn. The woman was rescued, using a ladder, as crews worked to extinguish the fire that had extended into the home, he said.
Fire chief Dave Cunliffe in an email Tuesday evening a family pet died in the fire.
Paramedics transported the woman, in her 30s or 40s, to hospital with minor smoke inhalation and burns, said Hamilton Paramedic Service Supt. Dave Thompson. A firefighter was also transported for heat exhaustion.
The fire caused significant" damage to all levels" of the house, said Cunliffe. Estimated damage is more than $500,000.
The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
